Burning questions (pun intended)
Using a LiteOn 411s DVD+-R(W) drive with K3B under SuSe 9.0 professional. Surprisingly, I can copy or create DVD discs as long as I'm using a DVD+RW. But, if I try to use a DVD-R, it always aborts with 'read failure' when trying to initialize and mount the disc prior to burning. Am I overlooking something obvious? I wouldn't have been nearly as surprised if it had been the other way around, -R's being recognized but +-RW's not. I'm a newbie to Linux, so be kind if this is a really stupid question. Thanks in advance.

Were you able to do this under windows?

Take a look here <http://dvd.chevelless230.com/> and (btw, TLDP.org will be your home page at first ) <http://www.erikburrows.com/index.php...ng+Under+Linux> and here <http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/-RW/>

Yes, I'm able to successfully burn EVERYTHING under windows with the same hardware setup. Utilizing any of a number of applications, my personal choice being Nero Ultra 6, but have also used Sonic DVD and Roxio's CD-Creator on occasion as well. But, I'm trying my best to divorce myself from Windows and dislike having to boot into a different OS just to manage my DVD's.

Forgive this newbie's ignorance, but what do the discussions in the provided links have to do with my problem with K3B? Is the underlying technology the same in K3b as the other burning tools being discussed? I'm really confused about which direction to turn here...

Thanks for the advice so far...

k3b is a GUI wrapper for a bunch of command line utilities (not to disparage k3b, which i know to be a well written app).

There is a forum on the k3b site, in which people may be a fair bit more knowledgeble about these kinds of things. <http://k3b.plainblack.com/index.pl/feedback>

P.S. Are you running the latest version? 0.11

Whiteskin:

Thanks for the info. I have posted this same problem on the forum you recommended, but so far no responses. I know the market share of Linux is far below Windows users, but I'm a little disappointed that I don't get more response from those forums that specialize in these Linux products. But, maybe I just need to give it more time.

I'm probably a little spoiled having spent a number of years as a participant on VirtualDr.com which has SO many users that I always get responses (whether they are helpful or not!). But of course, those are primarily Windows people, and the Linux forum on that site gets very little activity.

I've got this same question posted on JustLinux, LinuxForums, LinuxQuestions, this board, and the K3B link you provided... perhaps SOMEONE has encountered this before.

Welcome to the wonderful world of open source! Thanks again, I appreciate all advice...

It takes a while to find a home. LinuxForums is usually quick, though many of the regular people there are on slightly older hardware.
