Linux on a Shuttle XPC?
Has anyone had any experience with Linux on a Shuttle XPC (good/bad)? Any difficulties w/ drivers etc.? I'm thinking of getting the SN41G2B model w/ an AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton", some Corsair RAM (1GB) DDR, w/ a WD 60GB HDD. Does onboard video work, cuz I also have a PNY Verto GeForce3 card. Please let me know of any problems (or lack of) that anybody's had.

Thanks!

The only distribution I have tried on my SN41G2 is Knoppix 3.3, the 2-16-04 release. It included the forcedeth module for the on-board nic so I had no problems.

Thanks lynch and Whiteskin! I'm going to go ahead and buy the Shuttle system then. Knoppix 3.3 is downloading as I type. I might as well give that one a shot. Thanks again.

Knoppix's Autoconfig rocks, so not to much of a problem there. Use the Hard drive install script, and boom, you have have a debian distro installed at the ready.

Lynch - Did you use the I.C.E. Tech. heatsink that came w/ the SN41G2 or an AMD CPU heatsink? I don't wanna fry my CPU.

Use the ICE Tech HeatPipe system that came with the Shuttle or you will fry the system. The enclosure is so small you almost have to use it. I have not had any heat-related problems running it with the Pipe. My CPU is an XP 2000+. What are you using?

I will be running an XP 2500+ Barton. Did you use the grease that came with the Pipe, or a thermal pad? AMD's site suggests the use of a pad for permanent installations. Any insight there?

Thanks,

Does the Arctic Silver II last? Cuz the AMD site suggests that it can dissipate over time. Or do they just have a vested interest in heat pads? I'll ask around some of the PC shops around town too.

Thanks,

The info is in the 2.1Mb video clip, here. Watch the video titled, "Thermal Pad or Paste?" It says that thermal grease can "disperse over time."
The consensus around the internet seems to be that everyone uses thermal grease regardless of permanent/temporary CPU installation. I think I'll just get some Arctic Silver paste and be done with it.

Thanks,

Ringer
