Ok, yesterday, i hooked up to the net for the first time in a while with my laptop, and updated my apt-get tree. It told me that all my x distribution could be upgraded, so... i did, thinking of no reason not to. All the while, i was still in X itself. (It never prompted me to exit X, so i assume it did the update transparently) Later in the day, while i was away from home, i had to restart x, switching colour depths. When i typed startx again, boom... it locked up. It is freezing now, every time i start X, at varying points. I have checked /var/log/Xfree86-4.0.log, without sucess at identifying a cause. Console still works fine, however if i have to reinstall X, because of the way apt works, it would have to remove ALL my apps currently installed that depend on X. Is there a way to either reinstall it,without losing all my apps, or fix the problem (whatever it is) itself.
I could build X from source... BUT i'm on a 266, and it would take hours. And, i dont know what X's dependancies are, and i dont know if i really want to even go that route.
Anyone familiar with apt know how to get it to reinstall?
