Connecting XP and Linux
I would like to connect my linux (debian) system to my win xp box in order to back up all the files in my home dir. Does anyone have advice on how to do this, and preferably with a normal ethernet cable. (similar to the direct cable connect functionality found in windows (95,98... as far as i know)

Do i just connect the two boxes, then browse from the windows pc? Is there not some set up steps required?

Okie, lets try it here, in this topic.

A program that you compile for linux called samba, will allow you to see and interact with windows drives. Assuming that they are on a different computer you should be able to use konc or any file browser/system you use.

Now thru the network if you have it set up proper (assuming its two different computers. You should be able to thru the network view the drive and interact with it thru samba. It should allow you to back up the linux to the windows system. This is all theory for me, since i've never actually done it. And don't know any other program that'd let you too interact.

You could also try setting up a internal ftp, where you windows acts as the server and the linux client is the upload...Not sure if you can upload everything though.
