newbie installing RH( (or at least trying to!)
Ok. new pc, AMD XP2600, 512 mb RAM, 80 Gb HDD, and Albatron 128 mb GeForce FX5200.
i'm trying to install redHat 9. starts off ok. using the Graphic interface, anaconda starts up, detects my monitor ok and detects my mouse and graphics card as generic. the it says its loading x server then the monitor goes blank. anyone got ideas?
thanx all

silly silly question but could it be just the monitor turning off from having no movement from any keys of the mouse? like i said silly question

Other then that, hmm, have you partitioned the drive already, etc...? since i assume when its going to load up x, its getting fairly close. or its a live cd.

Goes blank right away? Do you get the X cursor or a blinking dash?
Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart the xserver. If nothing else it may revert to text mode with a useful error message.

I've had a similar problem, which I haven't put in the effort to solve yet. I get the impression that the newer nVidia cards don't work with the generic nVidia driver that comes with Red Hat. Red Hat correctly identifies the video card and monitor, then incorrectly adjusts the scan rate. Someday I'll get off my bum and test out the driver from the nVidia website and see how that goes.

Emboldened by the power of ctrl-alt-backspace, I just tried to install RH9 on my computer with the same results as sooperspook. After some struggling, I got it to work. This is what I did:
At the initial prompt, I typed linux text to install completely in text mode. At the anaconda stage, it detected my monitor correctly, but said I had a generic VESA graphic card. I selected the nVidia GeForce FX.
When it asked me to select text or graphic boot, I chose text, since last time I did this it didn't work in graphic mode.
Once I got everything installed and set up so I could boot to a text shell, I checked out the X configuration. It was wrong; none of the settings anaconda picked went in. Time to fix it.
I entered vi /etc/X11/XF86Config (case sensitive) to open the file for editing. I moved the cursor down to the "Device" section with Page Down. Sure enough, there was a line that listed the driver as "vesa".
I moved the cursor to the start of the name of the wrong driver and used the x button (case sensitive) to erase the bogus driver name. I pressed i to insert text and typed nv in its place. I hit ESCAPE and typed :wq to save the changes.
Finally I entered startx and there was the GUI. X is now working.
