Taking the sonic plunge
After much time being essentially happy with my linux laptop, the time has come to break the silence.

I have a dell inspiron 3500 D266XT.

Here are the specifications on the audio from Dell.

Audio type: Sound Blaster Pro-compatible voice and music functions, software wavetable
Audio controller: NeoMagic NM3298

Anyone have a good (step by step preferably) guide to setting up sound? I could recompile for ALSA support even if i had to.

I have been making the alsa modules

i get the following error

/sbin/depmod -a -F /lib/modules/2.4.24.160304/build/System.map 2.4.24.160304
depmod: Can't read /lib/modules/2.4.24.160304/build/System.map
make: *** [install-modules] Error 1

There it stops. Its already made the modules, and is just installing them.

I love how Dell neglected to put on their specs page that the sound card is actually a crystal 4237B. THat just made my life a whole whack easier.
