Pardon... i think what i mean was the raid. It is safe, as long as you are adventerous. There are a whole whack of utilities that can (though, beware of odd grub syntax). I'm slightly confused as to how your system is set up. (It may be that fedora's stock kernel is not recognizing the raid drive)

Setup:
ide raid = mbr, windows xp, other crap
ide drive on ultra133 card = some crap and linux partitions.

I boot to the raid normally. And, you're correct, the Fedora install didn't recognize my raid - only the drive on the add-in card. Not only did that mean that I couldn't install GRUB over my current mbr but it didn't see my winxp install either so it wouldn't have been configured to dual-boot.

Maybe I'll check out some other boot loaders...

Can you boot if you set it to boot of of the single ide?

Right now, no. I haven't actually yet installed GRUB to hde yet but I would assume it would.
I'm always just so afraid I'm going to screw something up with my XP. Maybe tomorrow!

hmm couldn't we do it where the boot is on the same drive as the single ide and modify the boot config of the Xp to look there for the secondary boot option?

I know it WAS possible. I seem to remember it happening. Give me a couple of minutes to check something.

Thanks, Whiteskin, I think I'm almost there. I decided to try bootpart since I don't currently have the ability to boot into Fedora. Once I found the correct partition that GRUB is on, bootpart was very easy to use.
The prob now is that when I choose Fedora from the bootloader screen, it just hangs at "GRUB".
Suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Well, separate from the prob listed in my last post, I may have another prob. Since the Fedora install only sees that one disk (we'll call disk2), I reinstalled GRUB to the MBR of that drive (disk 2) and set the computer to boot to that drive. Fedora started fine but got hung up at probing for new hardware (updating /etc/fstab). I let it sit for about 2 hrs with no change.
So, even if I can get the XP boot loader working, I'd still be stuck.

After trying to boot a couple more times, I now usually receive the message Kernel Bug at fs/proc/generic.c:664 after ohci1394 loading...

I've checked online and it appears that there are numerous bugs with core 2 test 2 in this regards. Apparently kudzu in general has some probs as well as onboard nics, firewire, usb, the list goes on. Well, at least I'm not the only one having the prob.

You might want to try a stripped down distro. In this regard, you can set it up better, and have more control of what is going on.

I suppose...

I was able to finally get in my turning kudzu off. But it would still be a pain since I have to change my boot drive just to get into Fedora. The crappy thing is that I just know I'm going to need a distro that's going to be compatible with my pci ide card, onboard gigabit nic, etc.

Still suggest Madrake? Or something else?

It really depends. You may want to give knoppix a try, as it should auto setup the system. From there you can install it to the HD. Its already well setup too.
