I'll give another guess: do you have the target HDD (on which you wanna mount Linux) and the CD-ROM drive on the same cable ?
his might be a cause ...
If not, hmmmm, tell us more about your hardware (what mainboard, HDD, videocard) it might me a known incompatibility with RH9.

OK check this thread :
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...002/08/3/12520
a guy received approx. the same error message like you :

EXT2-fs: unable to read superblock
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=09:02, iso_blknum=16, block=32
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 09:02

and by replacing the CD-ROM drive he solved his problem.

No.
I have two hard drives on one cable and I want to install Linux on the slave. The CD is the first on the other cable, and there is also a DVD. The hard drives are normal... they don't have special drivers or anything... The video card I'm using is Geforce2 MX400 but I have an onboard Intel one too. I don't know much about the motherboard but I know all this stuff was working in Debian before.

I don't think it's the CD drive because I just got the same error booting with the DVD drive.

Ok TazG I just installed RH 9 on my box 1 month ago- and everything went perfect. I've dual OS: Win2K , :-( also.
But before upgrading to RH9 from RH7.3 I updated the BIOS (that's why is important to KNOW about your maiboard) and also it's good the check the voltages given by your power supply.

OK since I don't know all the details of your system , check yourself the compatibility of your hardware components with RedHat soft at:

From I understood till know, the weak part of your H/W architecture -is the NVIDIA card- being a small producer, it might be not well covered by RH.
Have a look at www.nvidia.com. They provide drivers for the cards based
on their chips, but read the install instruction before installing.
They also have a forum where you can get help.
There are people that have installed and running their drivers, and it worked great.

My Intel onboard video is on the HCL, so is my sound and network... I knew about the nvidia.com driver, but remember I'm just trying to install Red Hat here... I can't install any extra drivers until I get Linux installed... right? Anyways I tried it using the onboard video but it still doesn't work.
I don't think there is any problem with hardware... It's saying "no init found" "try passing init= option to kernel". I haven't even tried doing anything with "init" because I don't know what I'm doing. Can you help with that?

Do you have the time to download another distro? It might be a good option to try something else. I'd really reccomend Knoppix, with an HD install. Knoppix's autodetection is even better than the autodection of RH/Fedora.

OK, I have Knoppix now... but how do I do the HD install?
EDIT: Never mind, I found out how. I'll tell you if I have any problem with it.

This something that I don't like. I am a RH user and I'm very satisfied. TazG, you can also try to put your question at

If you really wanna install RH9 (which I recommend it because: it's stable, is user-friendly (I use KDE) and there are a lot of project compatible with RH9) you can do what I did: try to find an older RH kit (7.2. or 7.3) install the minimum kit of software of 7.x and after make upgrade of all needed packages from RH9 kit.

Seems that the guys messed up something with the booter of RH9, because the message of TazG I saw posted on other forums by other people.

Well I downloaded version 7.3 and it boots up but in the middle of installing it says
There was an error installing 4Suite-0.11.1-8.
It said it could be a problem with the disc or that there is not enough disk space. I did md5 on the ISO and it matched, and there is way more than enough space in the partition I'm installing it to...
