Hmm, XDM is within the /etc/rc.conf file.

# What display manager do you use ? [ xdm | gdm | kdm ]
DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm

you should see that line in there. What you'll want to do is change it from xdm to gdm since thats the gnome display manager.

Would I be better off with an older version of Redhat? Should I try Mandrake instead? Thanks for your advice.

One more question (actually two, sorry!). I installed i386 build. Should I have used SRPMS build instead?

Would installing Fedora make a difference (or would I be in over my head way to soon)?

srpms are source rpms... so no. For now, RH9 is fine. Later fedora might be good, but for now, lets get RH9 running. MDK could be nice for you thouhg (better auto config), however i know even less about mdk than i know about RH.
