hmm well there's a couple of different packages for Fedora and the redhat line of disro's.

You have what are called rpms, that are basically preconstruced binary's that you just use the rpm command to install. http://www.linuxnovice.org/main_how....EW=VIEW&t_id=2 This site gives a nice litte introduction to prms which is most of what you'll use for fedora

As far as tar.gz tar.bz2 those are compressed files that you need to untar the files then you can install them. Tar'd files tend to be a source compile, where you make the finished working product yourself. http://home.nyc.rr.com/computertaijutsu/tarball.html this page will cover both rh rpm's and tar.gz tar.bz2 etc, also it makes note of slacks and debian's own packages which you'll not have to worry about.

The way I did it was open a terminal and as root type yum update, then install apt 4 fedora, and then apt-get synaptic , it is a GUI and you can pick what you want to install. When you download rpm's all you have to do is click them to install them,I would not mess with tar.gz or tar.bz2 untill you get your feet wet, later on.And use google,it will answer most of your questions, david
