environment variable for java
i installed java and tested it. then i was installing limewire and got this message.

WARNING! The amount of /tmp disk space required and/or available
could not be determined. The installation will be attempted anyway.
Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program

i am sure i have the disk space so must be the environment variable. I have run all these installs from root. using a new fedora download.

somewhat new to linux and dont know how to set environment variables

now this one is a bit of a problem Raccoon...because limewire is a known p2p application and the basis of p2p programs is to get stuff illegally.

From the rules: P2P Instructions - The purpose of P2P is to illegally trade copyrighted material. We do not support the use of P2P networks and any threads requesting help for them will be closed. This includes Kazaa, Bearshare, and the like. If you're interested in the topic, you are free to discuss it on our site (and please visit StealingIsIllegal.com), but information on how to use them will not be provided.

I personally consider installing to be using them so.... -.-

However setting the java enviroment involves knowing the location of where you installed java.

PATH="$PATH:/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_03/bin:."
export PATH

that's the format you want to use to set it so other things will recognize the java as being there to.

Thanks for the help and at the risk of sounding ungratefull but I have several p2p applications on my windows computer. I want to install on linux just as a learning experience as a computer hobbyiest. I guess you are right that by viewing their ads I am contributing to the problem. There are however non copyrighted materials to be shared but mostly I am interested in learning linux. Well I'll leave the remainder of my thoughts in the other forums
