cd sound no mp3 sound
i posted this on the linux questions newbie page and go some interest for a while but not a solution so I thought I would try some of the experts here.

using kde cd player kscd I can play a cd, however I cant hear any sound when trying to play mp3's from a file using say xmms.

I have the xmms-mp3 installed. Do I need some sort of input plugins to play various types of files. My real player does not produce sound either.

fedora core 2 fresh install.
I fixed the bug with the diminishing mixer control, that every one else had.

Try to search some of my older posting at this forum like:

http://forums.techguy.org/linux-unix/214011-xmms-redhat-9-8-a.html

I installed (using sources xmms.1.2.10) and goes OK - I'm also using RedHat stuff.

Fedora doesnt include support for mp3 because of copyright concerns.
Here's another thread about this issue. It's about Red Hat 9 but should still apply.

I think I need to uninstall xmms per that last forum posting but

[root@localhost xmms]# rpm -e xmms-1.2.10
error: Failed dependencies:
libxmms.so.1 is needed by (installed) kdeaddons-3.2.2-1
libxmms.so.1 is needed by (installed) kdenetwork-3.2.2-1

Which is ok because I found these two packages for re-install but I dont know what they do so I am leary of uninstalling them.

Can I uninstall those two with out having something disasterous happening. (at least in theory)

Also I had installed xmms-kde for the desktop. How do I uninstall this if it is not a rpm but a program I compiled

cd sound no mp3 sound
The command is :

rpm -e --nodeps xmms...

means that you uninstall previous player version disregarding it's links with those 2 libraries (and other dependencies). BTW you don't have to reinstall the libraries, they are still there on your computer.
Try to find (google.linux) a rpm of the new xmms-1.2.10 - installation goes easier than with sources.
If you decide to use mplayer (or xine) it's OK; I have mplayer
and it works like a charm (audio and video).

That's because non-support for mp3 is a well known issue with RH/Fedora and a lot of folks at LQs wont help with that stuff as they feel you should'nt waste thier time with a Q that could be answered by doing a search.
That's one reason why I dont go there a lot (plus I'm more useful here and at www.usalug.org ). Of course, not everyone there is like that; I get on fine with Jeremy and MasterC and a few others.

I was not trying to bash (flame-whatever the term is now) linux questions. I dont know much about how these forums work. Since they(LQ) have such a high volume of questions I suspected that my question just scrolled off the page after a few days and no one was still looking at it. I posted it on the newbie page because I thought it might be somewhat of a setup issue that a less than expert tech might give a quick response. Anyway I must learn to use the faq better. Anyway, thanks to the individuals here who have answered my questions.

I didnt think you were bashing LQ; I just thought I could help explain why your Q went unanswered.

no test sound in fedora k menu either
back to the drawing board. I uninstalled xmms and the xmms-mp3 and still no sound

when I go on the kde menu there is a system setting called sound card detection. I try to play a test sound and it still does not work.

Note when I installed the fedora 2 one option came up that looked just like that, which when I tried it and I did hear the test sound.

raccoon, my pal, what is characteristic to ALL distros from RedHat Inc. (RedHat, Fedora Core x) it's that they don't have ALSA support.
So start reading here a mini HowTo or, go to the main page of the project , where they have DOCUMENTATION, drivers, examples aso.

Again HTH, liviu
