slackware 3.5 should run nicely, I once ran it with x using windowmaker on a 486 dx2/33. OR if you like windows3.11 you could use the fvwm windowmanager

I think you must have been doing something wrong then. Linux has always run better on older computers. I have gotten Red hat 5.1 to run on a 386.

(As a side note, X was designed to run on UNIX, the original one. Linux compatability was an odd, but fortunate side effect)

Linux has grown, as a natural progression. People accept that XP will not run on a 386, yet for some reason won't get it through their heads that there have been massive amounts of growth in linux. In all parts. No longer is linux exclusivly a hobby system, it is now a recognized enterprise strenth OS. A 2.2.x system is still most likely too big for that 386. You need to go back, back through the sands of time, and look for an elderly 2.0 system. (Don't go much further than that)

I'll try an old compact legacy unix system (non-linux) and try the original X project on it. though this wont make it a major workstation it would make a really cool project.

You may have trouble getting an Xserver to run on it, but it should be doable.
