Can't help on Internet as I use a router and don't need to do anything. Others may be able to help.

Suse and Red Hat 9 are among the 15 systems I put into my box. Think you need at least Mandrake 10 and Slackware 10 to complete the big gun list. They all have their nice points. Red Hat is being replaced by Fedora Core 2 which has a 2.6 kernel.

Should try the Live CDs too. Knoppix 3.4 can get you from putting a CD in to a working Linux in 3 minutes (no question asked) and it is installable too.

Only in the home user's world. In the university and the server world Red Hat official is still the way to go since you can get technical support from redhat themselves, and really thats why most go with them because it is about the support...more then anything else. Just a clairification point

Nothing wrong with SuSE; you need to configure your nic.
Open YaST and go to Network-Devices> Network Card Configuration. If your card is listed, then highlight it and click the "Edit" button. There you can choose dhcp or static IP addressing. The buttons below there are for entering a hostname and dns server IPs (Host name and nameserver), default gateway (routing), etc.
