Hi.
I have been trying to fix this problem for ages, and a post on an xfree86 forum got no replies-any help from you guys gratefully received.

PC is AMD K6II-500 128MB RAM
video card is AGP S3 Trio 3D/2X 8Mb RAM
Using updated Redhat 9
XFree86 4.3.0
s3virge video driver
using XFCE4-much faster than gnome/kde!

I don't think accelerated video is working. Some screens take say 5 seconds to clear, slowly from the top. - Am I just expecting too much from this hardware?

The docs for X say to use s3virge driver for this card, and that fully-accelerated X display should work with this driver. The RH installer detected the card memory as 4MB and said VESA as the driver.

I tried to install an rpm to get chromium to run, since it gave an error about needing a (forgotten name)*.so.1 file, which a web search said should have been provided by an NVidia driver. This seemed odd to me since I don't have an NVidia card. I installed their GLX driver from the webpage. Chromium-even on lowest resolution and size was crushingly slow, PC very unresponsive, screen undates about once a second.

I kept on fiddling with different glx rpm's and have now broken things further.

I now cannot get programs using the extension glx to run, for example:

# glxgears &
# Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

or:

# chromium &
randomizing.
SDL initialized.
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Couldn't set GL mode: Couldn't find matching GLX visual


I don't know what to do about this. I am rather confused about what mesa, openGL, GLX etc are for, and which I need-why is NVidia apparently involved?

My XFConfig file does have the line to add glx in the Modules section. I can provide this file if useful.

If it's a problem with this card, could you recommend a cheap, but reasonable alternative?

You don't have a nvidia card so a nvidia driver will not work your card is supported but I don't think you can get 3d with it that is what glx is for,your card will work in 2d if you want 3d buy a nvidia or ati card about 50$ and up up up
