Can't get into graphical interface!!
I'm installing Mandrake 10 on a friend's system but cannot get into the graphical install. I did the text install and install kde too. When I reboot after installing, It doesn't go into kde it goes straight to console. Could be a video card problem but dont know how to fix it. Can someone help me.

do a lspci to show what the video card is...that will tell you what drivers it is, look to see in your xfree/xorg config to make sure everything is alright. make sure that you have kdm as a default runlevel item. etc etc. That'll keep you busy for a bit . Those are general things that could be wrong

Have you tried from the console to do a startx? if so go to your /var/log/xfree(xorg) log and give us the printout of that. Even in a console you should have links or links2 type of thing. a minimual text only browser.

I had same type of problem as stated in previous post.

At the login prompt, log in as root
once, you are logged in
type in su ( as superuser )
then type in mcc
this will load up an inteface to configure your graphics card / monitor / resolution etc.....

have fun

To boot into GUI without the need to go through the command mode is run at run level 4 or 5. That information is in the file /etc/inittab.

Just alter the number in the line

id:3:........

to

id:4:..........

Some distros use 4 while others use 5 for X11 entry so a check is needed.

I tried mcc in console and tried to change the video card driver. It was set to vesa when I first looked at it. Or at least vesa was highlighted. After I hit do while vesa was highlighted, I got a Can't install xfree package error. I get that for all the other drivers as well.

As for the run level, it was already booting into runlevel 5 which should be showing the graphical interface as in my other 2 boxes.

go back into mcc
your resolution is not correct
that is the error I received
set up proper video card
I set the resolution on monitor to ' generic ' and at a rate I knew my monitor can do
resolution should be set to 16 bpp

have fun

If you are logged in as root, why would you need to su. By the way, SU stands for Substitute User.

No screen found error is generally due to the available Linux drivers fail to match with your video/display. I got two distros doing that because my video card is too new for their kernels.

I don't know about M10, but back around 9 you could boot with the cd, choose upgrade, and install whatever you missed the first time around.

I've toyed with resolution for hours and no luck. I'm sure it's a driver or a configuration error. I want to copy my XFree86Config-4 here to show what I have, but i dont see a way to do that. I'm waiting to get on my other box where I have a bookmarked post with someone with EXACTLY the same error that I have.

My M10 also didn't work at first because the driver it chose for my video card. In fact I have 3 systems did that (Red Hat 9 and Libranet). I looked at those ones that work ( in my case the "nv" driver works but the "vesa" doesn't) and just changed the driver in "device section" of the XFree86Config-4. That is how I solved those 3 systems' display problem. At that time I have about 7 to 8 Linux systems to play with.

humm, I tried to change from vesa to nv, but nothing again. I was thinking that I need the Via driver, which is on the newer XFree86. M10 has a slightly older version. How can I update XFree86 and test that out?
