List of Critical, yet stupid problems
Computer Specs:
eMachines W2047
FreeBSD 4.10 Release with KDE
80 GB Maxtor ATA 133 IDE Hard Drive (Boot Drive)
40 GB Western Digital ATA 100 IDE Hard Drive
48x24x48 Khypermedia CD Rewriter
Realtek RTL139/810x 10/100 Fast Ethernet NIC
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ 1.667 Ghz Processor
VIA KM266 Chipset
Realtek ALC202\A Sound Card
Mitsumi 1.44 Mb Internal Floppy Drive
Pheonix Award BIOS
Win XP Native Operating System

I'm having the following problems with my computer:

The CD drive won't mount, its an average 48x24x48 CD-ReWriter manufactured by Khypermedia/BenQ, whenever I click the CD drive in Konquerer and select "Mount" it says "Error -kio_devices_mounthelper
cd9660: /dev/acd0c: Device busy
Please check that the disk is entered correctly"
I find this problem rather strange since I used the CD drive to install the system. If you insert an audio CD and open Konquerer, it will start spinning but the disk won't be recognized, any other type of disk doesn't even do anything.

The floppy drive will not read or write disks, when I tried to save a KWrite text document to a FD it gave me this message:
"Error -KWrite
plain_io: Input/output error"

Is there a way to run the disks through the BIOS? Or is there some obscure config file somewhere that I'm too lazy to look for?

The Primary Slave hard drive, a 40 GB Western Digital, is not recognized in Konquerer, neither is the second 40 GB partition on the Maxtor 80 GB disk, the only partition recognized is the one the system boots from and its sub-partitions (/var, /tmp, /etc).

I can't connect to the internet, I have ADSL which runs on PPPoE, however KPPP doesn't seem to support this interface, only Dial-up PPP Is there a tool for PPPoE?

My NIC is not recognized by the system in the LISa DAEMon setup

My camera, which should be recognized as a USB flash drive is not recognized in Konquerer

KDE doesn't start automatically, I have to start it manually by typing startx at the command line

Please note that I haven't been running this system more than a few days, and I know virtually nothing about it as of yet, none of the systems described above have EVER worked on this OS.

First off go to your /dev drive and look for /dev/cdroms you should have one and then under that you might have cdrom0. It might also be under dvd instead. Thats what the cdrom drive should be.

Floppy drives should be /dev/FD0. The primary slave drive should be hdb(partition number).

How does this help you might ask. Well you need to go to your /etc/fstab file and modify it so that it points correctly to the drives. so you will end up with something like

/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,ro 0 0
/dev/hdb1 (wherever you want the b to be placed) (filesystem type) (flags for said type) 0 0
so on and so forth

if you want to know more about fstab do a man fstab. It'll give you the various options and if you have questions about those options please ask.

For the Nic card please do a lspci and it should come up with a list of devices on pci, when you see the listing for the card please copy that to here so we can assist further in that.

to start kde automatically do a

rc-update add xdm default

this'll start up the graphical login on boot.

PPPoE i don't use so I'm not sure..

Are you using Freebsd? If so the disk names are different from Linux.
At the above link, scroll to the bottom and hit "Home" to access the entire Freebsd Handbook.

Have you tried mounting them as root? If the permissions aren't set to allow users to mount the CD/Floppy, then only root is allowed to do so...
