Please Help Configure stuff under debian :-)
Hello, i just installed Debian sarge with a 2.4 kernal, and im having some troubles configuring my video card and brodband internet connection.

My card is a Sapphire Radeon 9600xt, and I used the Ati Radeon (generic) display drivers when it asked me for my display drivers but the highest resolution i can get is 800x600. Ive change the XF86config multiple times but i cant put the res any higher on my 19" monitor.

My other problem is getting my brodband(adsl from telus) configured. I have no clue when it comes to this, i read somewere i need to change my ifconfig but i dont seem to have it(whenever i type in 'ifconfig' into the command line i get a syntax error.)

EDIT: im using the onboard NIC that came with my (Soltech 75FRN2-L w/ nforce2 chipset) motherboard

Thanks for your help,
Ben

First things first. Have you installed the binary package for the ati card? if not then you are running in a 2d mode only. you can get the package thru the RPM manager of debian. Once you have the package i'd suggest that you do a fglrxconfig. This will create a new xf86/xorg config file that will be tuned to your card.

Does your adsl connect directly to the linux machine? In either case you need to set up a pppoe connection in linux. There's a few of them out there and I believe that KDE has one built in already for you. Just take a look at it or online about linux + pppoe connections. IF you need help setting it up, let us know what one you are trying to use.

If you have other computers on the network? you might want to try and ping it...that will tell us if we need to do a kernel recompile to make sure the nforce 2 nic driver is installed.

http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.sta...installer.html <--that explains the process and how to get it from the site.

http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...ild-HOWTO.html this explains how to go about rebuilding the kernel to support your lan card.

make sure you do a lscpi (in a console) to get exactly what the card it is (lan card chipset that is). Google will tell you exactly what driver to use with that information you get. Or you can post that info here and walk thru all you need to do

p.s until we get your lan card working...you won't be able to connect to the adsl modem

sometimes linux has trouble with nforce but you can definetly get it working. i would preferably use xorg over xfree86 tho.

The point was Xneon that the config file is almost identical(6.8 is where the changes are). Not to mention that Xorg will look for Xfree86config after it looks for xorg.conf. So it doesn't really matter what format the Config file is as long as it is one of those two. Also, as you well know most distro's have switched to xorg as their default. However, not everyone has switched personally. Or haven't felt comfterable updating too it.

yah ive never undergone the change, i just choose distros that use xorg and 2.6 kernel as opposed to xfree86 and 2.4.
if he wants a stable debian system without having to worry than he can also choose to just install knoppix. that worked for me.

You need the forcedeth module for nforce2 nic if you're running the 2.4.x kernel.

Stability.Debian Sarge runs 2.4.x kernel by default for stability. The trouble was with nvnet.o module. Whenever a nforce2 system got the NVidia stuff updated it would bork the nvnet nic module and would need reinstalling or you just installed the forcedeth.o module. Which is what I did.
