Exclamation Linux Redhat 9.0 on VPC 2004
I'm having some trouble. I have Virtual PC 2004 running on Windows XP Pro. I'm wanting to learn more about linux and well i tried installing redhat 9.0 on the vpc. everything goes fine until installization is finished. after the system restarts it brings me to that first screen you get after a fresh install. only problem is, it's fubared (F'd Up Beyond All Reason, lol if you didn't know). anyways the reso is extremely high and its black and the only things i can see are like messed up looking images. i can see the keys image (i think it represents root) and the little home folder and something else. is there a bug with the amd64 bits not being liked by the vpc or linux? i have linux installed the real way but i like being able to go to windows to look things up and what not. thats why i tried it with vpc. any ideas or tips please let me know.

When Linux starts up press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace

You'll be dropped back into the Linux shell, login as root (so exit first)
and run 'xf86config'

Run through the setup and set your screen resolution to a lower one (like 800x600 or 1024x768) towards the end of the installation.

Then logout and login as your regular user, then type startx

ok heres what happened. after linux loaded i pressed those keys you said, it would take me to the shell but then would immediately take me back to the GUI. i just tried it again now since i had it started and this time it stayed. but now i can't get the xf86config to start. you said "login as root (so exit first)" what did you mean by so exit first? i can login as the root but what do i do after that. once again i'm a n00b with linux. i don't no all the commands yet or anything. i tried installing redhat on one of the computers at the computer store i work at (using VPC again) and the same thing happened there, so i ruled out the amd64 bit guess. also during installization i set the reso at 800x600, the other choice was 640x480. Virtual pc makes "hardware" that is very common and low quality, so i was thinking that could be a problem, but the thing is i can't adjust anything to what i actually have becuz VPC is telling redhat that my machine has such and such. i checked just now and the reso goes from 640x480 (when booting) to 1600x600 (when loaded) then when i went to the shell it was 640x480 again. my monitor can only handle 1280x768. so i'm really thinking its an issue between linux and VPC. help!

When you go back into the console (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) can you type this:

cd /etc/X11

then type

less XF86Config

and press space bar until you see a section called 'Screen' and post what it says between

Section "Screen"
EndSection

btw to get xf86config running as root you might need to
cd /usr/X11R6/bin

and then type

./xf86config

because I don't know if /usr/X11R6/bin is in roots PATH...

but do as I said above first.

Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "640x480"

virtual pc is telling linux i have an S3 Trio (generic) which is a ****** card but it doesn't explain why its jumping it up to 1600x600

i had it set for 800x600 but for some reason when it loads X it jumps it to 1600x600
but yeah i appreciate the help just lemme no what to do next if there is sumtin.
