XP-ert requires knowledgeable chums for Linux frolics
Having searched the forum and numerous googles, I would like to have a play with Linux as a dual-boot on my XPP machine. However, I have read with some concern the posts about people screwing their MBR and stuffing their XP installations and would like some expert advice as to how to make the two co-exist happily together.

Relevant information:

AMD 3000XP+
1Gb PC3200
160Gb SATA (Master) - Windows XPP (partitioned as C:\)
250Gb IDE (Master) - Backup Drive (partitioned as G:\)
160Gb IDE (Slave) - Bulk Storage (two partitions: F:\ - 140Gb NTFS & I:\ - 20Gb Unformatted)

I am proposing to install Linux on the 20Gb partition on the I:\ drive - is this the best way of configuring things? I am mindful from what I have read that it is better to keep XP and Linux on different drives where possible. Will this also reduce the risk of Linux screwing my XP MBR?

I had selected Fedora as a reasonable place to start unless anyone else has a better suggestion? I'm really just looking to increase my knowledge and understanding. I am an advanced XP user so it feels weird to be in a noob position again - please be gentle with me!

I'm happy to sit and read up on things but I just need to know where to begin and hope the forum will provide useful advice.

Many thanks,
