Fedora Log on
I just installed fedora core 3 and have a bit of a problem. During installation it asked for a user name and password. i didn't bother to put one in cause i simply assumed i could log on without one. But, there's still a logon screen and i have no idea what the username or password is. Is there a default name and password???

P.S. In case anybody is wondering, fedora core 3 is fairly easy to install although there are a few bugs.
1.if you are installing fedora core 3, don't bother using the cd check because it is flawed. it told me i had errors but installation still worked fine.
2. i found the partition options fairly confusing compared to other distros such as mandrake. other advanced users might find it usable but i'm just ur average user .

You always need to have an account. However, try root, and no password. IF that works, then the first thing you do is create a strong root password, and a normal users, and switch to the newly created user. you do NOT want to run as root.

FC3 most likely won't mount them automatically, however, you can mount them. Do not however, write to them.

mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/[windows]

Hmm, perhaps mandrake was using a captive driver. Anyhow, NTFS write support is still iffy, and I wouldn't touch it personally.

as it would turn out none of my drives are ntfs, all fat32. and your command line didn't work, it says that the mnt directory doesn't exist.

You need to create a directory in /mnt to mount the file system to. If your drives are Fat32 and not NTFS then you need to tweak that command a little as well.

MAN is your friend. Do a man on mount from a shell prompt.

ok tried all that, tweaked the command and created a directory. but then it says filesystem fat32 not supported by kernel.

manual. It's a help system built into 90+% of *nix systems.

man (command) will usually bring up the manpage for the command, containing syntax, examples, purpose, etc.

try
Code:
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/[windows]
use the directory name you created in /mnt/* instead of /mnt/ [windows]

You never want to use the cd-check; how can you trust the cd-checker if the iso you burned is bad? You should check the md5sums on each iso file, instead.

Thanx lynch, your command line did the trick. I'm not worrying about the iso's too much cause my system is up and running so the disc's must have been ok. BTW What's the 4th disc for?

The fourth disk is most likely Source Rpm's.
