pppd in linux
could someone help with with
I'm trying to configure my modem:
I added Linux in dual boot with windows so I can surf sans-virus on my Dell PII. The modem I had was not a linmodem so I got another (a U.S.Robotics Sportster 0484). This modem is an ISA modem PnP according R.Clark linmodem[dot]org site. First I used kppp which failed to connect then via pppd with setserial i checked serial connection

when i entered at console: setserial -bg /dev/ttyS* i got:
/dev/ttyS0 at 0x03f8?? (irq = 4) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS1 at 0x02f8?? (irq = 3) is a 16550A
/dev/ttyS2 at 0x03e8?? (irq = 5) is a 16550A

then used setserial to use ttys2

the problem is what pppd or other linux command could i use to
1) confirm that my modem is active?
2)configure my dial up

any help would be appreciated

wvdial
I answered my own question (again!)
found wvdial (by popular demand)
which according to docs:
<<WvDial automatically locates and configures modems and can log into
almost any ISP's server without special configuration. You need to
input the username, password, and phone number, and then WvDial will
negotiate the PPP connection using any mechanism needed.
Install wvdial if you need a utility to configure your modem and set
up a PPP connection.>>

It needs many C++ libs to install properly which I am downloading from
http://rpmfind[dot]net//linux/
I hope it works; any comments or guidelines are welcome
if you want know the outcome lemme know.
