On my home computer, I'm running Red Hat 6.1 and in X-Windows (gnome, with Enlightenment windows manager), all my windows are absolutely huge, and I can't figure out a way to re-size them. It's very inconvenient. Most applications don't fit on the screen. (Help, I'm a newbie and I'm drowning!)

It sounds to me like you may not be starting X Windows in the correct resolution.

Have a look at your XF86Config file (or you can run Xconfigurator or something in RH) and make sure the resolution you want is listed FIRST (like mine shows 1600x1200 1280x1024 1024x768) for the first line, and for all color depths.

If this ain't it, let me know.

Mike

I checked it out. All that seems to be set right and it's still huge. Any other ideas?

Are there any specific windows that look too big, or are they all huge?

Have you checked your monitor settings? Linux is very, very picky about the correct settings (vert. refresh rate, horizontal rate, etc.)

Looking at it more closely, it's not all of them that are huge, but just many of the applications. The terminal emulator and the toolbar are fine. Netscape is okay. Gnotepad, most of the games and a lot of the other applications are too big.

In that case:

If you resize the windows, then close the app and restart it, do the windows still remain huge, or are they the same size as they were when you closed it???

It may be as simple as just needing to resize the window once.

Some that I tried would resize, but then would be huge again the next time I opened them. Some of them wouldn't let me resize them at all. Is there perhaps a resizing method I don't know about?

I have been running Linux for a long time now. I have read the problem. The only thing that I can guess is that in Xconfigurator your not specifying the right screen size. X likes to have at least 800x600 but is more happy with 1024x768. At 1024x768 it should be fine. Now, your monator may not go up that high. If your monator woln't go that high, I don't know what other advice to give you.
