I have an @home cable modem and cannot get it working in Slackware 7.0.

I have run netconfig many times with many different settings and am still unable to get internet working properly.

If you have a working set up i'd appreciate some tips on getting mine up and running.

Thanks.

First, a few questions of mine:

What kind of network card do you have? Are you sure it's working? There should have been a card probe during netconfig, and if it didn't work you're going to have to manually specify the card in your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file.

Now then, assuming your card is functioning, did you set up everything correctly in netconfig? Are you using DHCP or the static ip address? If you're using DHCP, just tell it so and you should be fine.

Bit more info on what you need, and we'll get you set up (I have @home and Slack 7...)

I did a probe during netconfig and I'm pretty sure that it worked. I tried Both DHCP and static IP, neither worked. I made sure all my ip and gateway stuff was correct.
But just for information, where is all the gateway and dns information stored when you have entered it in netconfig (so I can change it faster)?

To change/edit your DNS entries, you'll want to look at /etc/resolv.conf and you'll be looking for 'nameserver 123.456.789.123', and you'll want to add your 2nd DNS server on the next line.

That's all I have in my resolv.conf.

BTW, as soon as you login to Linux, issue the command "dmesg" without quotes. It will tell you everything that happens during boot that's going by too quick to see.

Look for your NIC to see if it's picked up or not, and see if it got assigned an IP address.

I'd check netconfig again to see if it lets you specify your IP address, 'cause if it does then you aren't gonna be using DHCP. I don't, which is why I know know how to tell if you're using it or not.

Hope this helps a bit more!

Yeah!

You will be happy to know That I am writing this message from linux.
It was a combination of me not having the right namesserver and the wrong proxy config. Thanks for the info on the nameserver stuff.

It all works good.
Now I can try and get all my other hardware working without having to keep logging into windows to use internet.

Thanks again.
