I decided to start a new thread to make things confusing... Followed through the instructions without any obvious problems. Still no sound. When I exit Gnome, I get:

You doing this all as root, or did you create a user for yourself yet?

If you're doing it as a user, you probably didn't give yourself rights (as the user) to access /dev/dsp, the soundcard.

Try this

chmod a+rw /dev/dsp

chmod a+rw /dev/audio

just for kicks.

Don't you hate when a user doesn't follow up on their problem? Actually, I've been so busy with other projects (particularly school) that I haven't had time to work on Tech Support Guy, much less play with Linux. Soon, though!
