Hello!
Im really in need of some help. Im kinda new with this Linux stuff. ok, first things first, ok when i got my Corel Linux i totaly formated my windows 98. I installed Linux and it worked fine. But when i tried to take it out so i could get windows back it says "LI" up in the left hand corner right after the Hewlet Packard screen. BTW i have a Hewlet Packard Pavilion.
i tried the reformating disk it comes with. I have a win 98 boot disk and thats how i get into the Fdisk. And i also have a partition magic recovery disk. i think that the LI thing is LILO but is there any way i can get this fixed?
Please HELP!!!!!
Thank You.
Matt

Getting "LI" can mean 2 things (well, 2 things come to the top of my head, anyway.)

1. Your Linux partition is beyond cylinder 1024 on your hard drive. Linux has a limit, it can't be any farther down on your drive. I don't remember exactly, but I think it's equivalent to the first 4 GB on your drive. Don't take my word for that, though.

2. You removed Linux, but not LILO, in which case, there's nothing for LILO to boot, so it just sits there. This can be fixed by booting off your windows boot disk and then issuing the comand 'fdisk /mbr' (without the quotes.), which will rewrite the master boot record and kill LILO.

If you deleted the Linux partition, I think #2 applies to you.

Let me know if it works.

Mike

thanks mike it was exactly that i had my friend come over to help me with it. the problem was when i deleted my linux it was booting up lilo still but i partitioned the drive into two parts and then installed linux and then MS_windows. and when i restarted it had ms windows in the boot up screen. Thank you for the suggestions though.
Thanks,
Matt

What version are you using???
It could be simple, but it could also be pretty tough to do, this depends on the distro you use.

let me know, or feel free to start another thread.

I had the same exact symptoms when I deleted my Linux partitions. Thanks to Mike V, I was able to fix it with Fdisk /mbr Thanks. :-)

Maybe this is relevant, maybe not...just thought I'd let you know I have Linux installed past cyl 1024.

I'm new to Linux as well, but I think...as far as Corel Linux is concerned...it can be installed anywhere on the hard drive.

I have my partitions set up as
C: 98, 2gigs
D: NT4, 4gigs
Corel, 1.5gigs
Swap, 0.5gigs (waste=yes but have the space)
unpartitioned, 5gigs

Also, in a Linux class I took, they had 5 separate installs of Corel (one for each class taking linux) and 5 installs of Red Hat.

I'm not saying your wrong...by no means...but maybe this limitation has been resolved?

Just for further reference.

Cheerz!

That very well could be, or it could be that LILO isn't installed into the MBR of those drives and there is a seperate boot manager taking care of that.

I believe the only problem lies with LILO in the MBR and the actual root partition being past cyl. 1024... but don't hold me to that. Some of the newer kernels may have fixed that problem.
