Hello!

When I first installed Red Hat 6.1, the Dial Up Configuration tool caused a core dump if I tried to configure my modem. I installed a patch that fixed that problem. Then after messing around a while longer I finally got Linux to recognize the existance of my modem. However, I still can't get on-line.

When I use the RH PPP Dialer, it sits there for a long time with a window that says "waiting to connect", and eventually I hear normal modem noises. But the "waiting to connect" window doesn't go away and I eventually hear it disconnect before it ever really gets connected.

I've already double-checked the usual bonehead stuff like my ISP phone number, username and password. What is going on, and how do I fix it?

What kind of modem is it? Hopefully it's not a Winmodem, in which case making Linux recognize it is an impressive feat in itself.

Generally, you'll want an external, hardware modem (as opposed to software, where Windows controls it.) since those are usually not winmodems.

Most all of the internal PCI modems are winmodems, though. Not all of them, but most.

It's internal, but not a Winmodem. My dad says it's US Robotics, but I'll have to take a look at it to be positive. And I do believe my dad that it's not a Winmodem, because he put my system together, and he has always hated and mistrusted anything that depends on the Windows operating system.

I've checked, and it's a US Robotics Sportster 33.6 modem. I remember that I once had a similar problem connecting under Windows, but I can't remember at all how I fixed it. And right now this modem works fine under Windows 95.

Well, I'm afraid I'm not going to be much help here, as I don't have a modem in my machine (cable, ya know?)

My best advice would be to check the Modem HOWTO and dig through the troubleshooting in there.

I'll keep looking, though, and will post anything I can come up with.

Thanks anyway. I'll have to pump some of my other gurus for information.

Another resource that I've found invaluable is www.linuxnewbie.org, which also has a UBB discussion forum (LINUX ONLY Techguy, don't worry ), as well as an IRC channel on EFNet I believe.

There's also wonderful NHF (newbieized help files) explaining how to do a lot of neat linux stuff. I'd check there if I was you.

I've never gone over 4 hours from the time I asked a question to the time I had a response!

Good Luck...
