Trouble installing US Robotics 56k modem on Fedora Core 1
Hi there,
I'm having trouble making my modem (US Robotics 56k Voice internal PCI) work with Fedora Core 1 which I just installed. I havent really done a lot of experimenting ( ) ... looking for someone to guide me in the right direction.
Thanks

I'm not familiar with fedora, but that modem usually gets installed on Serial port 4 (ttyS0). What I've had to do in the past is the following:
If you open kppp (the internet dialer) and click on the 'setup' or 'configure' button (nomenclature depends on the version) then on the Device tab you'll see a dropdown box where you can select something other than the default /dev/modem. If you then go to the next (Modem) tab you can query the modem. If it's the wrong device, you'll get 'unable to open modem' or 'modem not responding' or some similar message. If you get a pop-up box with responses to the AT commands, you know you've got the right device and you should be able to dial out. You can either just leave it like that or set up a new symlink from /dev/modem to the proper device.

Hey,
Thanks for your reply. Um..I'm not able to activate my modem on Serial Port 4 (the screen hangs on the 'activating modem stage'). Also how do I open kppp (the internet dialer thing)?

Sorry for the delayed response.

First of all I have to correct an error I made in the earlier post. /dev/ttyS0 is in fact serial port 1 , where most modems would be installed. Serial port 4 should be /dev/ttyS3.

Again, I'm not really familiar with Fedora, but depending on how the menus are set up (assuming you're using KDE for a window manager), kppp should be under either Internet or Network on the menu - possibly under K > Internet > Other Applications, or something like that.

I have a U.S.Robotics Sportster a hardware modem which would not configure properly with kppp in KDE 3.2 running under Mandrake 10.0 I had to use Wvdial.

If Kppp doesn't work with tty0 to tty3, it could be kppp is buggy or your modem is not quite linux compatible. You can check Clark's linmodem.org website to identify your modem in the PCI modem chipset list as a linmodem rather than a windows only soft modem.

If kppp doesn't work you can dial up manually via console with pppd. Hopefully you won't have to.
