Dave - this might work better for what you're trying to do:
Smart BootManager

usually best to go straight to the source to get most of your answers.

At what point?
Creating the floppy?
Booting with the floppy?
Booting from the cd after selecting it from the menu?

I was able to download the exe file, then run the program from DOS (win98 box) to create the boot floppy ( sbminst -t us -d 0 ). When I booted the machine with the floppy in the drive I was presented with a menu to select which drive to boot from. Selecting the cd drive resulted in booting from the CD.

Point 3 I selected the CD hit enter and got the error, now some thing I did not do on the install was the -d 0 unless it defaults to the floppy drive it installed on the floppy just fine. I am using a Dell Latitude XPI CD its a 166 with 80megs of ram almost 10 times what ole' Bill ever recomeded a winders machine will need I have been using 98se and works but its slow I was hopping a Linux OS would be a little faster to boot and use .........

I get the same error if I just select the cd drive and hit <enter>.
Try selecting the drive, hit <tab> to bring up the menu, select "Boot it" and then hit <enter>

BTW - I tried an older version of Mepis on an older Toshiba laptop (233MHZ w/ 96MB ram) without much success. The live CD's are pretty ram hungry. You may want to try something lighter like BeatriX or DSL. There is a "Multi Distro" live CD that has half a dozen or so all on the same disc. Haven't found a website for it but a little more info and a download link for the iso are available at DistroWatch.

Why do you have to include a quote for the entire previous post when it is just above your post? Its good for pointing out certain aspects of previous posts, but is just annoying when its done all the time. (not trying to be a ba***rd, just trying to save electrons from unecessary abuse )

True & False, I think if this was an issue I would get an email, False my intent is to refresh ones memory of events, if they are like me (I need to check my wallet every once in a while just see who I am) then quoting the previous post just keeps thing stream lined.
IMHO your post about my waste of electrons should be applied to the mirror theory sooooo

Do you get 0xAA error, the 'decompression stopped', or something else?

Does the cd drive work otherwise?

Have you tried with a different disc (esp. a lighter-weight distribution)?
