Link user accounts to server
I'm dealing with two computers both running Mandrake Linux 10. Once is a server and the other a desktop computer. I want people to be able to sit down on the desktop computer and log in to use it, but all the user accounts are on the server. So how can I link the two together so that when someone tries to log in on the desktop it looks for their user account and home folder on the server?

you will probably need mount the directories using samba or nfs from the server over to the desktop.

So create a /userhome directory on the server and a /userhome/username directory on the server. Mount these directories on the desktop. On the desktop, create a symbolic link to the users home directory on the samba or nfs mount. So on the desktop, the /home/username would point to /userhome/username.

that was a bit over my head. I guess I'll need to read up on samba or nfs to make this work.

You can also check out NIS. I've never tried it, but it should work out for you. You still might need samba or NFS to map the home directories though.
