What app are you using to play the cd's. It may have your input device set to /dev/cdrom, when you might need to change it to /dev/dvd or whatever yours is.

CD problems
Thanks short101

after much faffing about (changing /dev/cdrom/ to /dev/dvd/) I can now play CDs using only alsaplayer.. works fine but ideally I want to use XMMS, but no joy here yet, so many settings but don't know which to choose.. could this be a conflict between different mixers?

Any suggestions?

TIA

the problem with cd's is that you can't mount them...if you mount them they won't play in linux. As confusing as that might be try that and just tell xmms in preferences that cd's are in /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd whichever you have it as

When you want to play cd's with xmms, you just go to 'play location' and type in where your dvd player is. (/dev/dvd or whatever it is) Might want to check your output plugin and make sure its set to alsa.
