Please advice!
Hi there,

I wish to integrate Linux OS with my current Window 98SE.
Compaq Presario 7400 desktop series.

I have 2 harddisks installed currently C an D drives.
C is primary and D is slave.
Can I install under dr D?
If thats possible, how do I proceed?

Another thing is, How do I know my system is under 'RAID' configuration?
Which mean if my C disk fail, the D disk will take over seamingly.
Please advice soon. Many thanks.

Regards
Diana

Just start installing any Linux distro and it should see your Windows 98 OS.
If your Windows OS is on drive C and you want to install Linux on drive D, the installer should say it is installing at /dev/hdb.
/dev/hdb might have numbers after it, those are partition numbers and is normal. As long as you don't install to /dev/hda your Windows OS is safe.

I'm not sure what you are asking about the RAID.
If you are looking to use drives C and D in a RAID and then install both Windows and Linux into that RAID, that isn't a newbie kind of thing and you need a motherboard with RAID support builtin or a dedicated RAID controller.

If you have a CD burner, sticking with backups is more appropriate.

if you have C and D , then you don't have RAID. RAID appears as one drive.

Be careful when installing a linux distro on a second drive. they won't hurt your windows install, but they will usually write over the mbr on the primary drive (the files that make windows boot)

this is usually ok, because they'll set up the boot loader to boot windows for you. but if you start playing around with different installs, you might get into a situation where windows won't boot.
