This morning im feeling adventerous and im gonna switch to linux or at least try it.

So can anyone tell me how to install it ive been on linux.org reading and reading and i found download sites but dont know which files to burn to cd so im gonna need some help here.

Currently I have Knoppix and Mandrake available to DL. Ive got enough space to write new partitions so i shouldnt run into any problems. I do want to be able to still use windows i just want like a 50g linux installation.

So someone with linux knowledge jump start this thread i plan to do this all right now

I need to know which exact files to copy to cd theres just so many .iso's. and other stuff its impossible to fit it al on a cd !

Go here http://distrowatch.com/ and you will see rankings and DL's to about every Linux available. You DL an ISO of your choice and burn the image to a CD-R - then boot with the disk and follow the instructions. I have no experience with Koppix or Mandrake but hear that they are very good. You will notice that Ubuntu is number 1 on the list and I do have it. It installed perfectly on my computer as a dual boot - it did everything by itself (move partitions and format etc.) and in my opinion it can't be beat - except maybe by SuSE, which I also have. So it is only one file that im burning to CD the .iso ?

I got ubunto 5.04 live i386.iso

Yes, it's just 1 file - and it has to be burned as an image, not just copied to the CD-R to work. You've got the live version which doesn't install (I don't think) - it just runs from the CD.

Guess ill restart windows and boot to cd

Im already fixing another problem with my PC at this point and i just hope this doesnt totally skrew me up.

The live CD allows you to try Ubuntu without changing your computer at all.
The install CD allows you to install Ubuntu permanently on a computer.

I figured id play safe and get the live cd.... so is there anything i can do with the liev .iso ????

After you've got a good bootable CD you no longer need the ISO you downloaded so you can delete it and save space on your computers HD.

Well im unsure about this live iso i got .... i dont think i burned it as an image first of all that could be why it didnt boot from cd.

Is it even supposed to boot from cd ?

Yeah, it should boot from the CD. If it didn't then you either have a bad DL or you burned it wrong. You have to do 2 things to your DL.
1. Run an md5 checksum to make sure you got a good DL.
2. Use a good burning program - Like Nero or something..

There is a thread a coulpe of lines below this one about md5 - you should DL it and learn to use it.

It seems that I cant access or even see my C and D drives..... whats up with this ??

im having major problems i just had to erase 20gigs of stuff ( re partitioned my whole drive during the installation of the ubunto linux ) and then it just stopped installing the base system at 6%.

... i had to reinstall my windows and lost alot of data... ...

I don't know what to tell you. I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot with XP Pro and it resized the partitions giving each OS 20gigs (I have a 40 gig HD) and it went perfectly. I did the samething with SuSE and it also worked perfectly.

Perhaps the name 'Catastrophee' has more significance to it than you expected.

If you have to reinstall an OS anyway why don't you do Ubuntu solo for awhile? Then if you don't like it you could always go back to Windows.
