well it seems to be missing a lot of libs for gcc etc. I think this is the time i shake my head and pack up and flee. My best guess right now is to look at what library packages that mandrake has on its uhrpm or what they call it. Since the make is failing because of missing files for compiling.

Tsunam, at this time would you suggest a different Distro or maybe even a reinstall of mandrake installing all packages?

Sence I know a bit about linux now, what would you suggest should be my next step? I would like to have a distro that has alot of programs out there for it that is easy to install and uses KDE.

personally i have a preference for gentoo but then its a bit harder to install. Just have to follow the instructions step by step . And have the patience to figure things out via the forums or others help. IE you configure x yourself etc..build kde so on so forth (its not for everyone)

Beyond that ubuntu is getting rave review's, but i think it uses gnome by default. Gnoppix if another that's excellent based on gnome, but there's a knoppix that uses kde instead. Fedora core 3 is the comunity based efforts of redhat inc. Its easy to install and configure how you want.

If you want to switch its really up to you. I will admit i've never been a huge fan of rpm's, because they are someone else's idea of what you need on your system.

It just seems like everything I try to install on this distro doesnt work, with the exeption of Firefox and thunderbird and packages from the mandrake cds.

It might just be me, but what else can I do? I mean, is linux supposed to be this bad when installing software, or did I screw up somewhere?

nah its not supossed to be this hard. It just happened that rpms didn't exist for what you wanted...and when that happens for a rpm distro, it makes things harder to install.

I cant remember if I told you about this before or not, so here goes:
Try setting up new sources for mandrake using easyurpmi. There is a good howto about it at usalug . There are tons of packages there.

I think someone did lynch, becouse this seems familure.

it doesent seem to work. I type in the first string and something starts, but after about three lines just stops. It wont let me type any more of the codes after I close-reopen the console. It keeps saying the urpmi is locked until I restart the computer and try again.

Copy and paste the entire body of text into your root shell and hit enter: when it stops and you get a blinking cursor, it's waiting for you to hit <enter> again. It should complete after that.

it wouldnt take the entire body of text. Even though I copyed the entire body, it would only paste the first line. When it stops at a cursor, I press enter with no effect.

bump

That seals it. If me having mandrake is giving you guys a hard time then there is no more reasion for me to use it anymore

I am going to install Gentoo. From what I have been reading it will be a good choice. I will keep Mandrake installed and install Gentoo to my removeable drive.

Nevermind. Gentoo has a text intstall. To many ways to screw up.

Looking at other distros.

And lynch, I am by no way doubting your ability with Mandrake. It is just everything suggested that should work with mandrake has given me major headaches. Obviously this OS is not reacting like it should, thus I am looking for another.
