how to use hostname instead of ipaddress for remote logging???
hi everyone,
i use red hat 9.
my computer is connected through a LAN.
i use ssh for logging into my computer from a remote computer.
i use the format
"username@ipaddress" for logging in.
but when i use
"username@hostname"
it says "ssh :LINUX: name or service not known"
i already tried modifying the /etc/hosts and gave my ipaddress in it.
pls help.
thanks in advance.
bye,
vsagar.

did you enter it in the hosts file on the computer you're logging in to, or the computer you're logging in from?

you need to edit the file on the computer you're logging in from, so it knows the ip address of the host.

if you did this, post what you enetered in hosts, maybe it's formatted incorrectly.

Do you have nameservers setup in your /etc/resolv.conf file.
