Mandrake 10 Doesn't recognize my on-board sound
Well I thought I could solve this without the help of everyone... but I guess I can't so here I am.

When I installed Mandrake the first 2 times, it auto-detected my sound and all was fine. The third time I installed it, It didn't recognize my sound, so I went in to see if I could configure it myself and quickly realized I had no idea what I was doing, so I didn't change anything. I've been in the system configuration tool and it just sees it as being an unknown I/O controller hub. I have no idea what to do, any and all help or comments will be greatly appreciated.

1. have you tried installing it the 4th time?
2. try aumix, alsamixer to turn up the volume. from the terminal.
3. or, isn't mandrake has MCC (control center) and see if you can configure it over there.
good luck.

I can't do any of those. I tried to get ALSA to configure it by running alsaconf from a terminal but it never detects and sound device. Yes I have installed it a total of 5 times. I don't know how much longer I'm gonna put up with this linux problem because I need my music when I'm on the computer.

do a lspci and look for audio stuff or if you know what your video card is then tell us that. Its generally good to know what kind of hardware we are dealing with.

It's not a sound "card." It's onboard sound. It's Realtek ALC861.

are you dual-booting? if you are, is the sound working in the other OS?
maybe this will help: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archiv...hp/t-1348.html
sndconfig is also available for mandrake. as root, urpmi sndconfig.
if still doesn't work, try mandriva. good luck.
