Installing from source
Every single time I have attempted to install a program by compiling it, it has failed. Only once has installing an rpm worked, and the program installed by it gets an error. My big problem though is the source installations.

Lets take the program cdda2wav. I downloaded the source, put it in a folder, and went into a terminal. I navigated to the folder(using cd), and entered ./configure. It configured fine. I entered make. This is what I get.

After that, I tried again and got the same. I then attempted a make install. I got something similar.

Every single time I try and install a program like this I get these errors. The only third party program I have succesfully installed sofar was Mozilla Firefox, and that one was just opening a shell script.

Any tips?

I've tried doing everything in root, and I've tried doing the config/make in $ and make install in root. That screenshot was from configuring and installing both in root.

only the "make install" has to be done as root.

do you gave all the required libs installed?
what distro are you using?
there are usually a bunch of packages with -dev at the end you need to install. check the documentation for the program you're installing for dependencies.
sometimes you don't get any feedback when you're missing something, the compile just aborts.

i just read this, not sure what to make of the second question, but it might be related.
http://www.escape.de/users/colossus/...l#requirements

they night mean that it's not working under the latest kernel, or you need to use an older version of cdda2wav, i'm not sure wich one

I'm using Mandrake 10.1. What I'm going to do is this: I will put off the installation of any programs for now. Sometime soon, I am buying another 40 gig hard drive. When I do that, I'm going to uninstall Mandrake from this drive and install it on the new one. At that time, i'll install everything in Dev(as well as other packages of course) and see what happens then.

Mandrake was never created with 'install from source' tendency in mind. You better find a rpm.

Try
$ CFLAGS="options" ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc

1) Like I think I said, only one of the rpm's I've tried actually worked.

2) Very few programs DO seem to come in rpm format. Maybe I'll try another distro.

cdda2wav and most of the programs you want are available through urpmi, Mandrake's rpm package management system. You should take a look at the URPMI Howto over at www.usalug.org. After you do the easyurpmi setup you can still install packages with the MCC package manager; it's just a GUI frontend for URPMI anyway, so it uses the same list of sources.
Most of the programs you mention are common to many distributions and are included with the installation CDs. You dont need to hunt down everything on the internet like you do with windows.
One thing that will help if you want to continue compiling from source is, when you install Linux, install all the development packages with it.
