using 2 NICs
hi all,

im having a problem using 2 NICs on linux. when only one of the NICs is used, everything is ok but when i use both of them i can't access my LAN. im planning to set one for the LAN and the other one for the WAN. i think im setting it up as a router or is it gateway if im not mistaken. would appreciate any help.

thanks,
ramon

we need more info about your setup.

is the wan card responding to a dhcp server?
do you need to be the dhcp server for the lan? or provide any other services?

if you can get online with one nic, but not two, the second card is probably being set as eth0 in the system when it restarts.
try switching the cables between the cards.

look at the output of ipconfig to see which card is doing what.

what distro you are using can help too, if they have their own setup tools built in.

hi ShavedApe,
thanks for your reply. i don't have a dhcp server, i assign static IPs on all the PCs in the LAN.

"if you can get online with one nic, but not two, the second card is probably being set as eth0 in the system when it restarts. try switching the cables between the cards."

how do i set the 2nd card to be eth1? sorry for this dumb question, i have not much experience in linux. i'm still learning on my own. i also not certain on what you mean by switching cables between the cards. if my understanding is correct, by switching the cable to the second NIC and it works this means that the second card is really set as eth0, right? then i guess my only problem will only be setting the other card as eth1. hope you can help me on this.

thanks,
ramon

which distro are you using,
they might have some tools that can help configure this, if you're not familiar with linux networking and commands.

the command i meant to reference in my post was "ifconfig" (ipconfig is for windows)
that command can show you the configuration of your interfaces, and it can configure them with options. (try "man ifconfig" for help with the command)
