I have what for you, will likely be a super easy question to answer.
I just installed SUSE Linux 9.1 Professional, and I can't seem to connect to the Internet. Every time I bring up the browswer and try to go to any search engine (or any website), I get an error that says 'host techguy.org not recognized' ex....
I'm sure it's just a matter of some settings, but I can't seem to figure out 'what' to set. I'm using cable Internet, not dial up or DSL
Everything obviously works fine through Windows
Anyway, if you can tell me what I need to do, I will surely appreciate it.

If a network connection, go to YaST2> Network devices> Network card and see if it's listed at the bottom in the "Configured" list. Click on the Edit button, choose your card from the list and check dhcp.
If usb, go to YaST2> Network devices> Network card> and highlight Other in the top box and click configure. Follow the tips on the left. I have not configured a usb cable connection so.....
Go here for more( better ) info.
Post back if you get stuck.

That wasn't it though. Keep in mind that I can't run both operating systems simultaneously, or I could tell you precisely what it says. But I went where you said, and yes, I'm running an onboard card, and not USB.
But when I followed the way to Yast2, and clicked on Network card, it said at the bottom Abit ethernet card
Configured with DHCP.
However I still can't connect to the Internet.
Everything I type into the address bar comes back with 'Host not recognized' or Host not known. I can't remember exactly which it says.
But let's use Yahoo for example. It will say something like, cannot connect to Yahoo
Host Yahoo.com not known.
And of course, it won't let you type the wrong thing, or it will give you an error indicating the wrong format.
So I'm not sure what's wrong.

You might also wish to set the gateway to the address of your router or modem. Generaly it's 192.168.1.1 if left at the default.
You also need to try pinging your cable modem and/or router.. Just type "ping 192.168.1.1" at the console. If it pings fine then your network card is set up correctly.

Well, I surely reset the cable modem. By the way, would I have to do this every time I switch from Windows to Linux?
Also I think I figured out what you mean by typing the IP into the cosole, but even so, it didn't work. I just got some response such as network not open or something like that.
Now the second thing you mentioned, as to inputing this information, where does it go, exactly? I'm talking about setting the gateway. I've probably typed stuff into so many places, related to the Network card and other related clients that I've probably got something else messed up by now.
As I've said, SUSE Linux seems to work fine, I just can't get the Kommander or Konsole to work to let me on the Internet. And I can't figure out what I have to do to get it to work.

| What was'nt it? If you shutdown windows and start Suse you can tell me.
Lets start with a few basic things:
Open a command prompt and type this:
/sbin/ifconfig
Do a copy and paste and post the results here.
Meanwhile, check to see if you have a file named resolv.conf in the /etc directory.
At the command prompt type:
cat /etc/resolv.conf
If it's not there, then switch to root by typing:
su -
Enter the root password and then type:
touch /etc/resolv.conf
That command will create the file; it doesnt have to contain anything.
Try to connect with something other than konqueror; Mozilla or Firefox should be installed already. There are some bookmarks already there. Try one of those to connect.
