Help needed - Linux sound not working
When starting up Mandrake 10.1 (or when trying to configure directly using Hardrake) I get a warning message telling me that the sound server encountered an error opening /dev/dsp (no such device/directory, I think) and is setting output to /nul instead.

Does anyone know how to solve this ?

What make/model of soundcard are you trying to configure? It sounds like you need to load the kernel modules for your sound card

Card model unknown
Thanks for replying. Part of the problem is that it's an old ISA card. I picked the box up second hand without any documentation. The motherboard is an ASUS SP97-XV. I have a couple of 3G hard drives installed as well as an old Voodoo Banshee (PCI) graphics card. But the sound card came with the unit and I cannot find any distinguishing brand or text on the card. Maybe I should just thow it away and get a PCI card instead.

have you tried a lspci to see if it shows up? Not sure if lspci pulls up ISA since i've never had to deal with a isa card under linux.

lspci
Yup. Tried that but lspci doesn't list it (it looks like it only lists PCI)

well there's only about 3 things it can be

soundblaster (unlikely)
Gravis (more likely)
Cirrus Logic (most likely)
I guess from there you can go through the kernel/sound setup and try and see if/what works for you?

Since i assume you don't have a laisa

Update
Thanks for the info. I'll play over the weekend and see what I can do.

Just a little extra info that may be relevant. A similar box shows a OPL3-SAx card. I'll work with that as a possibility. I've rund sndconfig and identified the card as an OPL3-SAx but still without luck. It want's me to tell it what dip switch settings are on the card for things like IRQ and io etc. but as far as I can tell there are not dip switches on the card.
