I'm using
version 2.4.21 - I work as a computer tech. so it's a bit embarrassing havn to ask. But if you could help I'd really appreaciate it.

It's for a local network, got a PC (my own workstation) and a webserver (Linux, used for PHP/MySQL websites), and I need to connect them over WiFi. Got the PC card WiFi working, now just need to get the Linux WiFi working.

All help appreciated.

Alright, there's a few things you need to have installed so you can do the madwifi drivers. Search the rpms for wireless-tools, that the kernel supports crypto for HMAC and md5 (this is in your kernel config, and might require a rebuild of the kernel.

download the source for madwifi and do a tar -xjvf (if you grab the .bz2).
cd to madwifi dir
type in make
type in make install
add the following to your modules autoload on boot:

ath_hal
wlan
wlan_acl
wlan_ccmp
wlan_tkip
wlan_wep
wlan_xauth
ath_rate_onoe
ath_pci

Make problems
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I'm having a ".config does not exist" error, which I understand to mean that I do not have a Kernel source on the drive. I'm still looking for the Linux AS3 CDs, I assume there's a source there. I'm only on dialup so downloading it isnt really an option.
I guess I'm going nowhere until I sort this out, so I'll focus on this for the moment.
cheers,
J

That would be correct, the madwifi install looks for the kernel version and .config for the making of the tree for supported options. I'd just assumed that the source was there. Once you get that then you should be fine.

Just to update.
I found the AS3 CDs and pulled the kernel rpm file from it - needed a few others before it would install but eventually got there. It's installed in

/usr/src/linux-2.4.21-4.EL folder.

I copied the kernel-2.4.21-4.i386.config file (or something close to that) from the /configs folder to the root and renamed it .config (is this correct, I read it somewhere else)

I then go to the /software/wireless/madwifi folder, where the madwifi is extracted to, a type make from this folder.

The make starts to run and then spits out a load of text starting with

"make: .config:8: pipe: Too Many Files Open"

Solved
Reinstalled the kernel source and redid the make.
Did the make install, both went fine.

Had a few probles getting the modules ath_pci.o modules to run but got there eventulally. Used iwconfig to set up the card and it's running like a dream now.

Thanks, for you help.

regards, Jonathan

Glad that I could point you in the right direction. Not to mention you get the proud feeling of having gotten it to work. Just a good feeling to have.

As a side note, if you need to connect to WPA encrypted networks, look into wpa_supplicant. Its fairly easy to configure.

One More Thing.
I'll try loading that WPA part. Everything is still working fine. BUT, how do I get it to save these settings. I have done a make && make install after everything has been configured but I still need to run the modules everytime I boot linux.

I have the same issue with SQL server, it boots and tries to load, but has a problem loading because I am logged in as root, but I dont know where to configure this.
