My info is possibly 6 months old but Knoppix has been one of the leaders in this field. It actually allows you to do a full hard disk install too.

Simply Mepis is also a live CD that lets you install. It has fantastic hardware support - the other distros are good but none found and installed the sound on my old Gateway except Mepis!

Can't read the damn thing but you should be looking for an iso file of the size of a full CD.
Mepis is also a nice distro. Knoppix is very well supported and have many off-shoots for different purposes.

OK guys I downloaded it and burned it. When I boot up it starts but then it goes into a higher resolution then 800x600 which my monitor (one from 1995) can not handle. so I guess I have to wait until I get a new monitor. Or does anyone know how i can get it to run in 800x600??

I had the same problem w/ knoppix. My monitor is an IBM T84H, which will take up to 1024X768, and it seemed to boot, then the monitor started displayed UNSUPPORTED RESOLUTION I thought there was a way to change this.
