Linux checked the intergity of the hdd regularly. Never bother me.

I install my Linux mostly 5Gb per distro so 20Gb should be OK for booting at least 3 Linux (leaving room for a swap). Linux is born to multiboot.

You can still get Mandriva free. Most distros require one disk, and have a few more for optional packages.
