Installed Unbuntu, device manger sees modem, but
Thanks for all the help dual booting 98 and Unbuntu. Actually that all went very well. Now I need to ask for further assitance.

I went to Networking to try to gain internet access. Filled out the properties, hopefully right, then went to modem tab. Unbuntu can not auto detect the modem. I set it to the manual setting of /dev/modem. Went out and when I set pppO to activate I get an error maseage "check that settings are appropriate for this network and that the computer is correctly connected to it." If I use any of the other manual choices, such as ...ttyS0 to S3, it appears to activate. however, once I close the network window and go back in I see the message pppO not active.

Device manager sees the Diamond HFC 56k data/fax modem (I believe it uses the Conevant chipset) and it shows the modem set to string 7, I assume this is similar to Win IRQs. Strings 11,17, and 8 are still available but I have no idea how to change to one of those if necessary.

A search for /dev/modem doesn't show up in any file system.

Thanks agian for your help

I found a site that sells Lunix drivers. It is Lunixant and has a driver for the Conexant HCF chip set, I think I'll spring for the $15.00 and purchase the driver because the driver clearly seems to be the problem. Maybe someone else will need this site for Lunix drivers.
