FC4 in a Windows workplace
I've been given a green light to install Linux on my desktop at work, even though
99% of us are on Windows. Hooray!

I installed FC4, but I'm having some inter-op problems.

1. First and foremost, I can't get evolution-connector to talk to the MS Exchange
server. I gave it the OWA URL it asked for. It just doesn't work -- pretty much fails
silently.

2. I can't figure out how to talk to the printer. A Linux guy here gave me instructions
to talk to it via JetDirect, but it doesn't work -- I'm guessing maybe their printer is
set up differently from this one.

3. There's an app I use weekly -- Oracle Self-Service Time -- to enter my hours (and
thereby get paid). Somehow the Javascript seems IE-specific. It doesn't use 'all'
and it doesn't give errors in Firefox -- but when I click on Final Review, nothing happens
at all. As for Galeon and Konqueror, they won't even let me authenticate.

Help??

Thanks,
Hal

1. have you asked the network admin to activate imap or pop3, that would make it far easier. If you are told that "this is not possible" I know that the connector with ms exchange...is SLLLLLLOOOOOOW...very very slow. The first would be the best option, and hopefully you have a friendly network admin/ are buddies with him/her

2. What kind and model of printer is it?

3. There's one possibility for this, you'll need wine. Then you can install ie6 with that. If its like the oracle database stuff I do at work, its the only way to be able to do that aspect.

I run FC4 within a Virtual-PC Window
If you have a computer an interesting thing to do is to install and run FC4 under a Virtual-PC machine, this way you can run XP-PRO and simetaneusly run FC4 [workstation or server config depends on installed memory in your system].

This is really cool, but you need at at least a 2gh CPU and probably 512Megs, better yet 1gig of ram.

or you could make a linux partition and dual boot :-P. You won't have the slowdown that makes a very fast machine work like its a p2 250 under the emulation software

Actually Virtual PC performance is pretty good, plus you do not have to reboot to access the OS which can be a real bonus when doing real time support!

Any that I've actually used have a fairly significant hit on performance. Its just the nature of the type of situation you are doing.

I personally prefer VMware to Virtual PC. Its a personal choice but then of course I know someone who worked for them so.

I think it depends on the app too, if you doing support then a reboot is not preferable or you have to have multiple machines going.
