It isn't just Mandriva that has a problem.... I have a 9250 card that was running reasonably happily with whatever drivers FC4 came with

I then broke the golden rule of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and installed the ATI driver package...
result... knackered gaming, the cpu usage goes through the roof if the pc even smells 3d gaming...
No it'll be Nvidia for me from now on

Have you guys considered using radeon instead ati as the driver?

I will try to do this without sounding too mean....No promises though....

saikee, alow us to regress:
Radeon IS ATI. If we get a ATI driver for our Radeon Card, it is going to be a Radeon Driver.

But ati and radeon are listed as different drivers in xorgconfig.

In the 70+ distros of Linux, BSD and even Solaris in my box I can confirm that xorg has given me an excellent service and am surprised that you have an issue with it, apparently with a high end video card which I expect to be displayable but not as fast as with the proper driver.

When I moved the distros from one PC to another none of them work because the graphic card didn't match. Many distros can also pick the wrong driver and "hangs" during an install. These can all be rectified by switching the display drivers around and make sure the HorizFreq and vertRefresh are set within the limit of the monitor.

Depending on the time of the xorg implementation and possibly the kernel itself in the distro the same driver may work in one Linux but not the other. This is rare but I did have the "nv" switcted to "vesa" just to get couple of the distros going. I believe that is more to do with that driver having been "improved" on in the later releases of xorg.

It is possible that you do hit a bad spot but I just didn't have such a problem with the other 70 distros. I am a live example that generic video drivers do work in Linux because I have not yet had a need to chase for a driver outside what is already available in the distro and I do have above the average number of them in the box.

I don't know why all of you are complaining. I use ATI cards under Linux, including their All-in-Wonder series, both older than dirt and very new cards, and I don't have any issues. Part of the problem may be that some distros don't allow you to boot into a regular terminal (unless it's their safe mode). I've actually had more problem trying to get nvidia to work under the GUI Gistros (Fedora, suse, mandrivia) than any other. Now that's just my experience, actual results may vary.

Unfortantly, we cant all be 1337 like you, DaijoubuKun. Also, you forget that even though it works for you it may not work for someone else for a whole list of reasons. Computers are like that.

Anyway, I got my screen looking like it should. I figured out that I have to competely restart my system after I picked one of the drivers for it to completey take effect. And being that there are about 6 different Radeon drivers supplied with Mandriva it took awhile.

Problem solved.
