Fedora Linux installation not running
With Red Hat 9 no longer having support available the Fedora Project
looked like a good way to try the Linux operating system out. Could use some
good pointers to this one working.

The installation went good until Windows came up with no option to run Linux. How do
you get Linux to run is a problem now. The idea was to see if Linux would be the better
of two choices. Run was to keep running 98SE. The other was to go with the upgrade
to a newer version of Windows.

A couple of questions...

Which version of Fedora are you trying to install?
Where are you telling the Fedora installer to put the Grub loader? I usually put it in the MBR.

Also you could create a boot disk. This is a work round rather than a solution to your problem, but it would allow you to boot into FC and edit the grub configuration file by hand.

The site here is where to get the Fedora Core 4 along with guides for installation.
http://fedora.redhat.com/

The grub installer asks if there is more than one OS being run when you configure the
boot loader. When fat is detected it asks if you intent to install Fedora on that or the
ext #2 or ext #3. So far it has been tried on both of the extensions where Linux goes
to format those. The installation also asks for where you want the root.

There is an option to install a different boot loader in this version. Without reformat of
the 98 primary the third attempt will be to try the primary with the save information on
partition option. There isn't boot image file small enough for a floppy from what has been
understood so far. How do you get the loader into the MBR is another item. The loader
with this version can be modified by the third attempt.

I'm about ready to throw this Fedora out the window! Now it's got missing kernel? when
you try to get the grub boot configuration right with the update method. Three reinstalls on
the same partition. A boot floppy shows the second fat32 listed. The Fedora installer says
the disk image is copied to the drive. Despite setting Fedora as the default 98 comes up.

ok, for a start ext2 and ext3 are different file systems, like fat and NTFS not partitions.

Personally I create free space on the drive before installing.
Then I partition the free space during the FC install.
I use the "I'll choose everything manually" method.
and create a swap partion of around 512K, an ext3 / partition and an ext3 /home partition

I then pick the software packages I want to install and let it run...

For the grub loader, I tell it to install on the MBR with xp as the default and off it goes.

There is the option to create an emergency boot disc at the end of this which requires 1 floppy disc, if you boot the pc with the floppy in the drive and your pc set to boot from the floppy drive, you should boot into linux...

Someday, say 12 months from now, when you look back you are going to be embarrassed by this post, for simply unable to communicate with the installer.

Just make one partion about 5 to 10Gb for the root for FC4, format it to either ext2 or ext3, have another partition say 1Gb for the swap, tell the installer you want the boot loader in the MBR and go to make tea.
