Ubuntu Install - Corrupted Display
I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my machine. After the entire installation process, when I login I get a corrupted screen. I can hear on my speakers the login tone, but the screen is filled with a lot of horizontal lines.
I also tried the Live CD but I get the same problem.

I was thinkin its a graphics driver issue, so I downloaded the nVidia linux driver and burnt it on a CD. Could someone please tell me how to install the drivers from the CD while in the Linux Recovery Mode. Or maybe if it's some other problem could somebody just point me in the right direction.
I have never used linux in my life, so I'm having a tough time understanding all the jargon on the net. Please, could somebody help me out of my misery.

I already have win xp and that is still working fine.
My Machine specs are:
AMD 3000+
1 GB Ram
Asus A8-NE nVidia chipset
nvidia 6600 video card
200GB HDD

Thanks....

If the mismatch isn't serious you should be able to remove the bad screen by pressing crtl+alt+backsapce.

Once back to a Bash shell you should be able to run "xorgconfig" and slect your own video driver and monitor frequency. That is the first step and always works for me without bothering with the driver.

When xorgconfig is execeuted its configuration file is available in /ect/X11/xorg.conf which is quicker to alter by editing.

You can then type "startx" to try the new setting, back to bash shell if more modification is needed and repeat the process untill it works.

Thanks
Hi there,

thanks.... fiddled around a bit with my xserver video config, i found that i can only login using vesa.
i've got the nvidia linux driver, but i can't seem to be able to install it. Read a lot of user forums abt nvidia driver installation but can't seem to find the particular problem I am facing.
I think i'll start a new thread about that.

Thanks a lot.
