MSN Messenger for Linux
My friend has 56K dial up pay as you go. He logs in about every 2 weeks onto MSN web messenger. This isn't nearly as good as MSN 7.5. He acceses the net via linux. my experience with linux:
You right click for start menu
There's a little green lizard
It's another OS

He told me this when I asked him if he wanted me to download the proper thing:
find one for suse linux 9.2 &9.3 with instructions on how to install and i'll consider it.

Anybody know? I can't find any linux versions on msn site. I heard linux uses .cog files instead of ,exe's....

Anyway, if anybody can have a link, prefrebly with instructions to a working download compatable with 'suse linux 9.2 and 9.3' Id be grateful

Cheers
Your friend jackdw

Linux uses a whole range of installing files -> not .exe's, depending on the distro. There is no official MSN messenger for Linux. There are third party applications which connect to the MSN network like Gaim and Kepote (generally these come preinstalled with the distro).

Your other option is to use web MSN as mentioned or to use something like Wine to run the windows MSN version (although this is tricky for a newby).

So with these Gaim and Kepote, do they do all the functions MSN messenger can do? Eg, webcam, file transfer?

They have most of them. They are NOT MSN Messenger 7.5 so do NOT expect them to be. They are third party open source programs. Their aim mainly is for chatting but they do offer file transfer, and may well have webcam. Go to their respective sites and have a look at the features list (iirc Gaim 2.0 is to be released soon) and check some screen shots. Kepote will only run on a KDE setup linux, whereas Gaim will run on both Gnome, KDE and any other DE.

Suse should already have Gaim and Kopete installed. How experienced in linux is your friend?

A distro is the "version" or flavour of linux, in this case Suse 9.2 or for example Ubuntu, Fedora, Slackware and so forth.
