I am no fool Squashman. I would not ask for help without reading all the included readmes and instructions

The very first step (after downloading of course) is:
Enter the command ./ati-driver-installer-8.20.8.run to launch the ATI Proprietary Linux driver installer. The ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Setup dialog box is displayed.

I do this, replacing ati-driver-installer-8.20.8.run with the actual name of the file. I get an Access Denied from my konsole. Even when I su- and become root I get a Access Denied message. I am following the instructions, but I am not getting the results. In hindsight I should have posted this information first but I wasn't thinking

After that I tried double clicking the file- nota. Then I thought that maybe that file was not compatible with my distro and was wondering if there was another way to install a driver.

That did it! When you asked me about the permissions I looked and found that an option called "is executeable" was not checked. I Checked it and tryed again. It ran! Now to finish up the install...

Thanx

Do you get a command line login? If so, have you tried to run the command startx after logging in.

Have you checked your /etc/inittab file to make sure the correct run-level is selected?
Look at your dmesg file and see if there are any errors on boot up.

Startx does the same as kde, gives me a bunch of code and puts me back at the command line. Did not write down all the code yet, cause there is alot of it.

Last thing I did was run fglrxconfig as the ATI instructions requested. I think I messed up with the settings. I am going to try running that again and see if I cant fix this.... I will be back....

I reinstalled Mandriva. The weird colors are gone but the lines remain. I replaced the Vid card with a different ATI card. Same problem. I think I might have to install GART drivers. Any ideas and instructions on how to do this?

I am abandoning this thread due to the fact that no one else has posted to it for the past 9 days. I have temporarly fixed my vid problem by installing an old generation card, a RageXL. Still cant get my Radeon or Rage 128 Pro to work.

For those of you looking for answers, here are the questions and their answers from this thread:

How do you install Firefox in linux? Easy. Unzip the file. Thats right, it is a completely self contained folder! Place the folder anywhere you want, point some shortcuts to it and your all set!

How do you load songs onto an I-River T30 MP3 player in Mandriva? Currently you cant. I-River is working on a firmware update that will make the player a UMD, but untill then you have to use a windows system to load the files.

How do you get the extra keys on your multimedia keyboard to work? Download Keytouch. It is an easy to install RPM that will alow you to set what keys do what. Very useful

How do you install the driver for an ATI..... Stop right there. Your wasting your time. Unless you are a linux god you might as well forget it and get Nvida.

I now use linux for 95% of everything I do. That was the origianal aim of this thread. Thread Solved
